Hey Marseilles Fan Photo Contest (East Coast)

Normally I focus on the West Coast events here but I want to send a shout out to any Hey Marseilles fans who might happen to be reading and might be attending one of their six East Coast shows (August 1 in NYC; August 2 in Cambridge, MA; August 3 in Philadelphia; August 4 in DC; August 5 in Northampton, MA; and August 6 in Bangor) – the band’s got a nifty contest for their East Coast audiences.

Take photos at any of the above shows, upload them to a Flickr page linked on their website, and tag them with “hey, marseilles, super, contest”. The band will review all the photos posted and select two winners to get a fun prize pack that includes utographed CDs, vinyl, tote bags, stickers, t-shirts and maybe even more.

Airport Way South Viaduct Open House on July 28

The Airport Way South viaduct over the Argo Railroad Yard has seen some better days; large loads and huge traffic volumes have caused the bridge “significant distress”.

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is working on fixing the bridge’s problems – fixes include replacing the viaduct’s north and south approaches and seismic retrofitting and structure rehabilitation work on the mainspan of the viaduct.

To get this done, the viaduct is being completely closed for about 12 to 14 months, detouring traffic onto 4th Ave S. and East Marginal Way.

SDOT is hosting an open house to talk about the project’s current status and detail their upcoming plans – if you’re interesting in learning what’s going on and speaking with project staff join them July 28 from 6 to 8 pm at the Seattle Design Center’s 3rd Floor Conference Room 370. The Seattle Design Center is located at 5701 – 6th Ave. S.

Yallah! Artivism for Peace – August 6

What do skateboarding, street art and the Middle East have in common? They’re all elements of Yallah! Artivism for Peace, a group show at evo on August 6 that serves as the launch and fundraising party for The Bedouins, a new non-profit with the goal of using skateboarding and street art as a tool for fostering peace between Arab and Israeli youth.

The show features skate decks, paintings, photos, video and music aimed at raising awareness and developing some funds for peace projects. The free show takes place August 6 from 6 to 10 pm at evo’s – 122 NW 36th St in Seattle.

The Cracked Up enters Terrible Twos

Fans of free comedy mark your calendars for August 1st as The Cracked Up celebrates its second anniversary of existence with a special free show at The Capitol Club. Okay, so it’s always free, every first Sunday of the month, but this coming Sunday is a special day so show up and help them celebrate with laughter and night long Happy Hour deals.

Your onstage host remains show producer/creator Solomon Georgio; the anniversary show also features Ross Parson, the show debut of Andy Palmer and a special long distance routine from James Parkinson who isn’t letting a little thing like being in New York City stop him from participating.

Show at 8, 21+ – The Capitol Club is at 414 E. Pine.

Ready, Set, Bag! super special deal of the day

Ready, Set, Bag! is a documentary about the National Grocers Association’s Best Bagger competition. Like other competition documentaries, Ready, Set, Bag divides its time between the build-up to the competition, the competition itself, and the lives of some of the competitors.

Groupon is an awesome service that allows people to get super massive discounts on one service or product in their local area each day.

Central Cinema is the fun Seattle dine-in cinema that features all kinds of neat films, including Ready, Set, Bag! from August 6 – August 11.

The three of them come together for a Groupon that today, July 25 only, allows you to buy two tickets to see the movie, a large popcorn, and a reusable bag with the really cool logo of how to pack your bags properly all for less than the price of two regular movie tickets alone. As an added bonus, for each deal purchased $1 is donated to Seattle’s Food Lifeline Food Bank. How sweet is that?

PlayFirst Unites Women, Chocolate, and Facebook Gaming

Women and chocolate – yeah, it’s a cliche, but it’s a cliche that does seem to have some merit – we’re not all crazy about it, but how many women do you know that don’t like it at all? I’m guessing the number’s pretty low.

So it Playfirst who announced today their first foray into social gaming with Chocolatier®: Sweet Society on Facebook.

It’s a strategy that makes sense; a Playfirst-sponsored survey by Frank N. Magid Associates called “Magid Media Futures 2010 Social Media and Consumers” found that 38 percent of all regular social network users 18 years and older regularly play social network games, and 58% of these players are women.

Chocolatier: Sweet Society brings three major innovations to the series: destination gameplay with both a shoppe and a factory to manage, “lickable art” , and social elements. Players go behind the scenes as factory machines create an assortment of delectable confection and unlock the Baumeister’s secret family recipes. Players also decorate and manage their shoppe and invite their friends to help them build a chocolate empire.

“Our goal with Chocolatier: Sweet Society was to take a franchise millions of players love and bring it to Facebook in a way that is authentic and compelling to both the brand and the social platform,” said Mari Baker, CEO of PlayFirst. “In limited release, we’ve already reached over a quarter million players and we’re confident this game will please the sweet tooth of Facebook gamers everywhere.”
